Our test drive meme is open to everyone, so please stop by for a little fun and see if you’d enjoy playing with us. The TDM primarily takes place in Gildenhirst, the main hub city for Bravely Borrows. The surrounding area of Caldisla is free game though! Please explore the setting as you desire.

Eggs Aplenty
Oh no. Oh dear. There has been a horrible series of mistakes surrounding ChantiLilly’s egg delivery. For one thing, it was delivered to the Central Market on the Ground Floor! For another thing, there are far too many eggs here. Dozens upon dozens upon dozens of eggs. The bakery’s Patissiere would be grateful if you could help bring these eggs up to his bakery in Rooftop Gardens. You’ll get some gold and some fresh eggs for your troubles.
This Bunny’s Buggin Me
A farmer from Norende is going batty over the swarm of bunnies that have been getting into his fields. Help a fella out, won’t ya? They are swarming en masse and ruining the spring start ups! Don’t expect to be able to herd them out without a fight though– these rabbies really pack a punch! They’re also carnivorous so…. Watch out?
A Rock and a Hard Place
An avid collector is searching for some new specimens. They’ve heard there are some expansive cave systems in the Norende Heights that just might be the perfect spot to collect some geodes. The only problem is that they’re an eensy teensy bit full of kobolds. You’ll be compensated for your troubles if you’d go collect some rocks, and every actual geode will get an extra reward. Please don’t fall off the cliffs…! The paths are narrow and harrowing at times. Good luck!

A direct shot to her heart. Kyoko slumped forward a bit with a sigh. "We really were foolhardy enough to travel without so much as packing a lunch... what a hard lesson. We'll take better care of you from now on, Pen Pen."
How could they do such a thing to him, truly they are monsters. Perhaps a slow pet down the penguin's back will make up for their transgressions, though it seems the bird's attention is still being taken up by the fish in front of him. A moment of pause is given before he polishes that third one off, at least, and he takes that moment to give an appreciative little squawk.
"We won't make that mistake again," he agrees with a tiny sigh of his own. As long as they have a say in when they leave, they'll make sure to pack lunch for everyone first!
Kai had figured the worst case after they'd gotten their money and paperwork was that they'd have to invest in some conbini fish for the little guy. He'd been pretty confident in that, man. "Yeah," Kai agreed as he rubbed a little spot between Bug's eyes. Thanks for being such an enigma, little guy.
"Until then, we just gotta treat you extra like a prince. Maybe there's even a fishing spot we could take you to."
Kyoko nodded vigorously. "We can't be too far from water, if they're able to bring such fresh fish to market without even refrigerated trucks, right?" Because she was pretty sure this was not a refrigerated truck kind of place. It felt very possible that it wasn't even a refrigeration kind of place. "That'd be nice, right, Pen Pen?"
That had been Shinji's guess as well - if there's fresh fish, there's gotta be some place to catch them close by.
"If we're lucky, we could probably find a nice place for you to swim around in, even." The suggestion is met with an inquisitive little tilt of the head from Pen Pen - that could be nice, right? It might not be as nice as hanging out at a hot spring, but that's better than being confined to soaking in a bath tub. They'll have to investigate, if it looks like they'll be here for a while.
"We'll get it all scoped out." Maybe it'd be ideal for a leisurely day of fishing and letting their bird friend swim swam around. That'd definitely be nice.
"It might be a while 'till we get back today, but we'll have more food for you for sure. You'll keep an eye on Bug, right?" Down the orange went, already rolling out of Kai's hands to come bump into the penguin's space. Hi Hi hello hello.
"Keep each other company until then, okay?" Kyoko brushed a finger over Bug's peel (?) and then gave the penguin a gentle pat as well, before pushing herself to her feet with a small sigh. "All right! Let's go find some money and the answers to our questions for real now! If only for these two!"
Hello, orange friend, are you ready to get amicably rolled around the room now that your companion is filled with fish and affection? Propped up by promises of luxury? Because you're gettin' rolled, buddy. This is how you keep an eye on a Bug. Enjoy.
Up with all of them, then, now that their critters are all in good shape again. "Should we go ahead and pool the rest of our money together right now?" That way no one has to fret over who pays for what, if they end up needing anything while they're out.
There they went. Kai watched them for a moment, a warm smile playing with his mouth as the pair went about the room. With that back to form, things felt a bit more normal again.
Kai turned that warmth back on the two of them and nodded, already fishing that pouch back up. "Yeah, let's do that."
Kyoko nodded as well, a bit grateful to fall into something as familiar as housekeeping. The world might be full of mysteries, but she still knew how to keep things organized! With that thought, after passing her own little money purse over to the boys, she fetched the butterfly-embossed notebook that had apparently been assigned to her. Was there a pen? Yes of course there was a pen don't question it.
"Let's go ahead and start tracking expenses along with what we have, so we can determine a budget~" Why did she only sound a few degrees less enthusiastic about this than she had about the prospect of wizards. "It would have been ideal to start last night, but now's still a good time! Since I can still remember everything we've spent so far~"
Find joy where you can, Kyoko. Perhaps the books they were given truly are for note-taking, how fortuitous that they'd find a use for them right away, and seeing her start on using it for this inspires Shinji to retrieve his own once more along with his funds. Maybe he can keep tabs on getting Pen Pen fed until they can get into a more reliable rhythm? The book gets tucked under his arm for the moment, the money situation is a little more pressing to figure out first.
"We haven't spent a whole lot just yet," he comments, digging out his remaining gold and placing it on top of the bed - a good enough place to pool it before they pick who gets to hold on to it.
The enthusiasm was charming as always. "Right. It'll be an easy catch up." Just two nights at the inn and some food so far. Kai took his and Kyoko's gold over to plop the coins near Shinji's. The sight of a pile of physical money seemed wild after so long, it almost seemed like they had way more than they probably did. They were rich. (No they weren't.)
Even if they weren't rich, it didn't seem like they were in a terrible way. Kai plucked up a coin to inspect it, idly turning it over in his hands. "Seems like we'll probably be alright for a few days, so as long as we find some odd jobs we'll be fine."
"Expenses~" Kyoko said as she wrote it down in swooping letters at the top of the first page, in that very convenient header space which was surely for this very purpose. "It's because we haven't spent much at all that now's the best time to start tracking! So we can quickly learn how much we need for the basics." How much was one of those fancy coins worth. They would! find out!!
Tongue between her teeth, Kyoko hummed as she jotted down each of their purchases so far, drawing cheerful little flowers in lieu of bullet points. "Right? It does seem like we'll be able to manage for a little bit at least."
They'd probably been given enough to survive easily enough for a couple of days, Shinji thinks. "Splitting the room between the three of us definitely gave us a little extra wiggle room with our money," he says, mostly an out-loud thought. "If we have to stay here longer, though..." Fish cost might catch up with them fast. That's not ideal. "Hm."
Well, with that thought in mind, he may as well make that note in his own book. His hands are otherwise free now, and as he opens it up to the first page, he takes his eyes off the pages to instead take a look around the room, for a clock of some sort. "What time is it right now...?"
Maybe he ought to join in on this journal party he thought as he watched both of them with theirs. He couldn't think of what he'd do with it at the moment though. Write down their strengths for jobs...? Huh. Hmm.
"What time...?" Kai joined Shinji's gaze around the room, but the search would soon show that what they were looking for wasn't there. "Hang on," he said as he wandered over to their door, "I think I saw a big clock in the hall."
Sure enough, there was a large pendulum clock swinging steadily down the hall. "Looks like it's after eight," he said over his shoulder.
"Ohh, are you going to keep a log?" Kyoko looked up, already done jotting down the record of all the money they had spent since yesterday. How unfortunate that nobody was looking at anybody's journal right now; truly they would simply never realize their secrets. "That's smart!"
"Thank you, Kai," a big help for these plans! Before noting that down, he gives a quick glance over to Kyoko, "Ah, it's just going to be for keeping track - of..."
As his focus drifts down, his thoughts momentarily evaporate. He thought he had opened to a blank page. This page is not only not blank, but full of extremely relevant looking information? Flowers? Lovely swooping letters? Um.
He has left them hanging. Hold on. "- Pen Pen's meals." But that has become unimportant in an instant, and he instead hurries his way over to look at what Kyoko's writing, brows knit together in confusion. Let him see? What is happening here??
That's right he was a good and helpful boy. Yes sir. A good, helpful boy on his way to join this stationary party even if he didn't know what he was going to do with it. Doodle, probably. He'd just grab his smiley face book and-- oh, Shinji why were you in such a hurry? Let him just cruise on over, gently tapping his book on Shinji's shoulder as Kai peered down at what was so urgent.
Kyoko blinked up at the boys as they converged upon her, the journal still laid open on her lap to the page she'd been writing on. What? Was this about? Hello?
"I wrote down the price of the fish right here," she settled on after a brief moment, tapping the page. That was relevant, probably?
He can see that! Which is very helpful but also not exactly what he's so baffled about. Here, let him shed some light on the situation, and hold open his book right next to hers.
Imagine, if you will, a pair of identical looking pages breaking down their expenses so far. These three don't have to imagine, that is what is right in front of their faces.
Except not! Because wow! Check out those two identical pages. They were in fact the same. Kai blinked at the two books. "Huh." Leaning on Shinji, Kai flipped his book open and held it near theirs.
Now there were three flowery transaction records to look at. "... Magic books?"
Kyoko stared at this apparent photocopy for a moment. And she stared. She stared!
And then she raised her pen again. Carefully, as if she might scare the magic away, she drew a string of question marks in the margin, across from all those neatly written expenses.
"Oh, wow..." he murmurs out, eyes widening as those confused little question marks appear on everyone's pages. Nobody knows what's going on, not even the paper itself. Wowzers.
"That's... useful?" Maybe not for note keeping, in hindsight, unless they want to all have the same notes handy at all times. "We... we can probably communicate through them." ! An extremely analog replacement for their lost Havenwell communicators, possibly!
"Probably," Kai exclaimed softly. "That's really cool." It sort of felt like there was the distant memory of someone saying to check their journals which in hindsight made a whole lot more sense than it had at the time.
Peering a bit more, Kai nudged his book against Shinji's. "Ours have butterflies though," he pointed out. Right there next to the list!
Magic books...! "We won't even need doves to send each other notes!" Even if birds would have been charming and fun, it was hard to beat ~magic~
The butterflies were a mystery, though. Kyoko looked down at her page again as if to be sure she hadn't drawn one and forgotten, but nope, it was just her plain old header. "That's strange..." Tipping her open book up, she tapped the pages over her mouth thoughtfully. Check out that pretty design on her cover, neat huh. "That's the only thing I definitely didn't do."
