Red Mage ★ Monk ★ Knight ★ Performer ★ Ranger ★ and Freelancer of course If you desire these threads to be canon, an asterisk was simply loaned to them. Please return it at your earliest convenience.
NEED A QUEST?
If you need some direction on how to begin, why not gaze upon some sample quests? Go on a journey. Fuck around and find out. They are completely optional– write whatever prompts you want!
Eggs Aplenty
Oh no. Oh dear. There has been a horrible series of mistakes surrounding ChantiLilly’s egg delivery. For one thing, it was delivered to the Central Market on the Ground Floor! For another thing, there are far too many eggs here. Dozens upon dozens upon dozens of eggs. The bakery’s Patissiere would be grateful if you could help bring these eggs up to his bakery in Rooftop Gardens. You’ll get some gold and some fresh eggs for your troubles.
This Bunny’s Buggin Me
A farmer from Norende is going batty over the swarm of bunnies that have been getting into his fields. Help a fella out, won’t ya? They are swarming en masse and ruining the spring start ups! Don’t expect to be able to herd them out without a fight though– these rabbies really pack a punch! They’re also carnivorous so…. Watch out?
A Rock and a Hard Place
An avid collector is searching for some new specimens. They’ve heard there are some expansive cave systems in the Norende Heights that just might be the perfect spot to collect some geodes. The only problem is that they’re an eensy teensy bit full of kobolds. You’ll be compensated for your troubles if you’d go collect some rocks, and every actual geode will get an extra reward. Please don’t fall off the cliffs…! The paths are narrow and harrowing at times. Good luck!
Have an excellent time, friends!
Thanks for stopping by ♥
Kyoko was still processing the suggestion that they might somehow have money(??), and then being shocked at the appearance of a whole new bag on her personage (?!), when Shinji stepped forward to set the requested sum out. ?!??
So many new things to think about! She had nodded along readily with Kaito--modesty wasn't anywhere near as important as staying near the boys right now. There was a slight pause at the mention of just one bed, but then she squeezed Kaito's hand and gave another, smaller nod. In this kind of situation, of course that would be all right. Right?
As long as Kyoko's not raising any objections, then it should be fine. Shinji is still... not sure how well he's actually going to be able to sleep, even with the relief of having found his most important people, so there's very little risk of anyone getting kicked out on accident. This is the kind of situation where the closeness should be welcome, and they shouldn't be worrying too much about a luxurious stay in the situation they're in anyway.
That was that then. The receptionist cheerfully handed over their keys and offered directions to their room. If they needed anything else, they shouldn't be afraid to ask! After more thanks for this very helpful lady, it was time to go find their room.
Once they had trudged up to their very own room and stepped inside, Kyoko turned around in a slow circle, dazed, not really seeing anything until her eyes landed on the boys again. "Ah..." She was so tired, a new heaviness settling over her now that they were all together in this quiet place. "This... is really happening, huh."
Finally, they are free from stairs for the rest of the evening. Thank you, cozy little inn room.
The silence washes over Shinji as they make their way in, and the relief from securing a place to stay for the night starts to undo the stress that was keeping him from falling apart the whole day. Today has been. a lot. The full scope of this emotional turbulence is in danger of finally catching up with him, even as he tries to busy himself with getting his belongings out of the way - if all of them are going to be comfortable in here, maximizing floorspace is probably for the best.
"Mm," is his quiet, noncommittal answer to Kyoko's question. It sure seems that way, doesn't it? "There... has to be some way out." There can't just be no way to get to Kyoko's world, not after everything. "We can try and figure it out tomorrow."
The sight of (one) bed was a beautiful thing. Thank you, bed. Thank you, room.
Kai had followed Shinji to set his bag down with his things, crouching down long enough to check on the roly poly cargo inside. Doing alright in there, Bug? All peachy? (orangey??) Good. Come on out and roll around a bit, it was fine. Once that was taken care of he made his way over to Kyoko to take her bags from her-- let him take at least one weight off her shoulders there.
"Yeah... We can get a better scope of things after some sleep." If it was a whole new set of gods to deal with, who knew how long it would take to appeal to them. Kai wasn't going to think about it tonight. Tonight was only for holding on to what was right in front of him.
Let him just move Kyoko's stuff out of the way, so that he could free up his hands. They were on the move now, taking turns to reach out and gently ruffle each of their hair. "We already got this far. We'll be okay."
Kyoko gratefully allowed Kaito to take her bags as she watched Bug roll around to check out their new digs. The relief at seeing the orange was quickly followed with a hit of panic and guilt--had Pen Pen made it here too? She couldn't even remember if she'd thought of him until now, with all the wild fears clouding her head all day, and now she was afraid to ask.
Curling her arms over her middle, as if she could squash down the anxieties churning her stomach, Kyoko accepted her hair ruffles with a very quiet "mhm." Was she really supposed to go to sleep now, after... everything?
Don't fret over penguin fates for too long, Kyoko, for not long after Bug is unleashed into this world does Shinji unload Pen Pen's designated bag. He takes a moment to try and give the bird a quick look-over, just to make sure he wasn't hurt from the spill Shinji had taken earlier, but his companion's a little too squirmy, anxious to finally be free and he ends up wiggling out of Shinji's hands. Well... if he's feeling well enough to do that, he's probably fine. He shakes out his feathers before taking to waddling around the room to scope out his new surroundings alongside Bug.
That's all the most important things accounted for, then. Another, "Mhm," is given from Shinji to echo Kyoko's, sinking just a tiny bit as he receives that ruffle. His heart is exhausted, and his legs hurt, his head is still swimming with worries, and he just wants to lay face down on the bed and wallow for a few hours but he doesn't want to do that to Kai and Kyoko. What is he to do now, then...?
Crouch down by his things, possibly. Maybe try to hide under the veneer of inspecting what's here while he hides his face while he's unable to really stop that bout of tears from finally hitting.
Kai let another small smile slip as the dynamic duo made their way around the room. It was another small comfort that both of their friends made it with them. They were one more piece of normalcy in an extremely wild scenario, and one more bruise their hearts didn't need to carry.
Honestly wallowing on the bed seemed like a really good course of action. Despite all the fatigue hanging over them, sleep probably was a ways off with how keyed up they all were. Laying down was mighty appealing, but Kai didn't feel like doing it all on his own. Especially when they both looked so lost. The easy solution here was to just drag them both on the bed with him but... Kai watched them both, brows creasing.
Kyoko was a step closer. There were more soft touches to her hair as Kai brushed away a few of her bangs, giving her a very tender look. "Go ahead and rest a little," he murmured softly. "I'll be there in a sec." He knew Kyoko would understand, that hopefully that 'I' would be a 'We' once Kai checked on their favorite boy. Here was a long overdue kiss pressed carefully to her cheek, and a gentle nudge to the bed. It was her choice though.
Kai stepped over to crouch down next to Shinji, settling his palm at the boy's back again. If there were tears, Kai didn't call any attention to them, simply pressing Shinji's kiss right there against his hair. It was alright. Let it all out, bud.
Oh, thank goodness--penguin accounted for. That immediate panic could subside now, leaving only all the other background worries for Kyoko to try not to actively fret over. It was hard.
But soft touches and kisses were a good balm for her nerves. Kyoko had met Kaito's eyes tentatively, and given a little nod to his suggestion, but she wasn't going to settle down right away. Instead she would busy herself taking off her shoes and setting them neatly beside her luggage, rummaging through to check things almost absently as the knowledge of the tender happenings with the boys pricked at the back of her neck. Ah, she didn't want to insert herself where she wouldn't be wanted, but she wished... she wished she could do anything.
It's hard. There's a lot happening right now that's simply hard to cope with, no matter how much relief there is from finding themselves together again.
That warm hand at Shinji's back really only encourages more of those tears, which he does his best to cover by bringing his own hand up to his face to cover his eyes. He takes a shaky breath before clenching his jaw tightly, like it will be enough to stop himself from crying altogether. He didn't want to make them worry, not after everything, and surely this is only going to do just that. Come on, Shinji, pull yourself together.
"Sorry," he eventually says, small and quiet enough that it shouldn't carry very far past Kai, voice thin through the effort of keeping a tight lid on any errant sobs. "I-... sorry."
As if Shinji ever needed to ask Kai for some patience. The blonde just rubbed the other's back in slow strokes, a soft 'shhh' on his breath. Hearing those apologies made his heart ache all over again. There was no reason to be sorry.
"You've held on tight this whole time," Kai whispered back to him. He'd been trying so hard to keep it all inside, even when the both of them had been overcome. The steadiness had been appreciated, but it was Kai's turn to be the steady one. He tilt his head against Shinji's, pulling in a slow, deep breath to encourage a few of his own. "It's ok, Shinji. Go ahead. It's safe to let it go now."
Ah. Kyoko couldn't really hear what they were saying, but the feelings flooded the room regardless--or maybe she was projecting. It wasn't like she hadn't noticed that Shinji was the only one who didn't cry earlier.
Clearly what he wanted now was privacy for this vulnerable moment, and Kyoko knew she owed him as much of that as she could give in the circumstances, but ah... ah, this sucked.
The truly ideal bit of cry privacy he was after had already been kicked out of reach when Kai had so very kindly come to his side. There are bigger things to worry about right now! He's not trying to make himself one of those things, and there's no way this isn't going to make everything that much more uncomfortable but between the ordeal of saying goodbye to Havenwell, winding up someplace wholly unexpected, convincing himself that he could be alone only to stumble across his most important people... Well, the other two are going through almost the exact same thing. It feels unfair that he's the only one crying now.
He stays tense for another few moments before leaning against Kai and trying to match the pace of his breathing, shaky as his efforts are. "Sorry," one more time, he doesn't want to be doing this either. An audible sniffle escapes before he quiets down again. "I'll be f-fine."
Sorry about the overly aggressive affection of your dog, Shinji. The worrying just came from the loving, so it was going to happen whether there were tears or not. What good were shoulders to cry on if they weren't offered? Hiding those tears just didn't feel right. Kai was sure Shinji wasn't going to be the only one crying in this room for too long.
That simple lean did wonders for the anxiety that was tightly coiling unnoticed in Kai's chest, letting go in another slow exhale. "I know," Kai assured him. Shinji would be fine. He wasn't alone, he was so strong, and they'd tackle this like everything else. "You will. It's still okay though, to not be okay."
Hand still steady at his back, Kai turned his head so he could catch Kyoko's eye too. "None of us need to be okay tonight. This sucks."
She couldn't miss that sniffle, try as she might not to eavesdrop. Oh no. She was definitely intruding too much now, but leaving would surely only give Shinji something else to feel bad about. Could she just make herself tiny in this corner and vanish? What she really wanted was to hold him, but...
But Kaito caught her eye. That... didn't feel like he was telling her to leave. Kyoko bit her lip, and stared down at her hands. If she was going to try to comfort him at all, now was probably the moment, right?
Quietly, she slipped across the space between them to sink down beside Shinji. Carefully, she rested a hand on his back below Kaito's. "It sucks," she agreed, her voice small. "It really, really sucks... but I'm so glad you're with me."
The desire to be alone was one solely based on wanting to keep the burden of Shinji finally being overwhelmed off their shoulders, but that operation is now in shambles. A total failure. His consolation prize is an extra hand at his back, at least, so that's... that's something.
He nods a little, as much as he can while he's still got his face in his hand, because it sucks, and he's glad they can say as much out loud, but also, "I am, too... r-really glad." It's for the best if he tries to remember Kai's words, too. It's okay to not be okay. Isn't that the sort of mantra they'd been living under for the past few years with so much comfort? They can keep embracing that here, that's okay. That gentle nudge in tandem with the hands at his back are enough to keep him from really regaining too much of his composure, so... there's some success for not being okay, at the very least.
"And... you two are safe," he adds, still struggling to keep his voice steady, "I'm so glad for that."
It was okay not to be okay. It was okay to fall apart sometimes. That held true in Havenwell, there was no reason it wouldn't be true wherever this was. Why not do it in the safety of each other's arms, where they could put each other back together? No one here was a burden.
"Mmm, we all made it in one piece," Kai affirmed into his shoulder. Even Bug and Pen Pen. "It's... not what we wanted," he went on, his volume going softer, "but.. I'm still home, with both of you. I wouldn't know what to do."
"Mmm," Kyoko echoed softly, settling in a bit so her side would lean into Kaito's a bit, her other hand coming to rest on his back as she gave Shinji's a very tiny rub. "There's... there's nowhere I wanna be if I can't have you with me," she admitted quietly. Knowing they might have to wait to be together again even if everything went as planned had been agonizing enough--if she'd actually lost them, Kyoko was sure now that she only would have regretted going home.
Cozy. That should be good to help heal their hearts, thank you.
They're all here together, and that's something that he should be taking comfort in. He should, and he knows this somewhere in his heart despite all of the turmoil going on in there. Easy now, Shinji, relax a little... his shoulders droop a tiny bit as those circles are rubbed into his back, thank you for those efforts, Kyoko.
"I'm sorry... that things went so wrong." For whatever reason, who can truly say, but, "It sucks." It just does.
Ah. This was good. That extra weight was appreciated. Kai trailed his hand down to gently touch Kyoko's, a small unspoken thanks of his own before he ventured higher up. He slipped his fingers through Shinji's hair, starting up a slow and steady rhythm of strokes.
"Yeah." Really and truly. They were all able to say it now. Even if it wasn't the worst case scenario, even if they were grateful for that, it still sucked. "We did all we could though, so... I dunno what we would have done different."
Kyoko didn't know either, for all that she felt sure it had to be because of her. Maybe she'd taken a wrong step, maybe her thoughts hadn't been clear enough, maybe the gods had decided a slacker like her shouldn't get what she wanted. She was going to wonder forever, probably.
Finding Shinji's shoulder, she gave it a squeeze, as much to hold herself together as to comfort him, she hoped. "It'll be okay," she promised, her voice small, "somehow. We'll figure out what to do."
Maybe Shinji's cosmic debt to the universe for screwing up his world wasn't so easily remedied, maybe he was simply not allowed to have a normal world. It's extremely easy to get caught up in these what-ifs, especially with a lack of any clearer explanation. Even if Shinji doesn't know what kinds of troubles are brewing in Kyoko's mind, at least they're on the same boat.
Finally, though, he lets his hand drop away from his eyes, covering up his mouth instead. Tears may be in full display now, but it gives him the means to slip his free hand carefully around Kyoko's back to rest between her shoulders. Sorry, sorry, please forgive him, but he could desperately use an extra lifeline of his own.
"We will," he says, muffled as it is. They'll figure it out. They have to. "We'll... we'll get to where we should be."
Kai was ready to gently knock their heads together at a moment's notice for their extremely incorrect takes on this situation. No one was at fault here. Not Kyoko, not Shinji, probably not even the gods they knew. They weren't saying their thoughts out loud, so their noggins were safe for the moment, but rest assured: they would be bonked when they needed to be.
"... Yeah. We will." Wherever that was. Kai couldn't whole-heartedly agree that they'd get somewhere else at this point. They didn't know enough yet about where this was, or if it was anything like their situation in Aellyn. But they'd get somewhere, and they were going to get there together. That was still the most important part.
"We'll make the best of what we have 'til then." Which meant more brushing Shinji's hair, and more warm leans against Kyoko. Right now, this was the very best they had.
Kyoko could only offer up a tiny hum of assent--she couldn't bring herself to sort out how they were going to make the best of whatever this situation was right now, but she was going to put her all into it. And that meant taking care of her most important people, whatever they needed, so she was just going to scoot in closer now to pull Shinji into more of a hug, releasing his shoulder so she could wrap her arm around him instead--that was okay, right? They were in a pretty awkward pile now, but surely that could be forgiven.
