Our test drive meme is open to everyone, so please stop by for a little fun and see if you’d enjoy playing with us. The TDM primarily takes place in Gildenhirst, the main hub city for Bravely Borrows. The surrounding area of Caldisla is free game though! Please explore the setting as you desire.

Eggs Aplenty
Oh no. Oh dear. There has been a horrible series of mistakes surrounding ChantiLilly’s egg delivery. For one thing, it was delivered to the Central Market on the Ground Floor! For another thing, there are far too many eggs here. Dozens upon dozens upon dozens of eggs. The bakery’s Patissiere would be grateful if you could help bring these eggs up to his bakery in Rooftop Gardens. You’ll get some gold and some fresh eggs for your troubles.

This Bunny’s Buggin Me
A farmer from Norende is going batty over the swarm of bunnies that have been getting into his fields. Help a fella out, won’t ya? They are swarming en masse and ruining the spring start ups! Don’t expect to be able to herd them out without a fight though– these rabbies really pack a punch! They’re also carnivorous so…. Watch out?
A Rock and a Hard Place
An avid collector is searching for some new specimens. They’ve heard there are some expansive cave systems in the Norende Heights that just might be the perfect spot to collect some geodes. The only problem is that they’re an eensy teensy bit full of kobolds. You’ll be compensated for your troubles if you’d go collect some rocks, and every actual geode will get an extra reward. Please don’t fall off the cliffs…! The paths are narrow and harrowing at times. Good luck!

It was a few more long moments before Kyoko was ready to pull back and meet their eyes with her puffy ones. The nod she gave them was probably the weakest they'd ever seen from her, but the effort was there. She might not be ready to believe that they'd be okay, but they were together, so... not everything was lost. She couldn't go giving up now.

"Thank... thank goodness, I could find you at least," she sniffled. Ah jeez she really was gonna need to wipe her face in a minute here, just as soon as she could stand to let go of either of them. Please keep holding her and petting her hair indefinitely, her boundaries were still gone.

The hair petting may not be the wisest move on Shinji's part, and that thought settles in his mind very subtly the longer this goes on. He doesn't know if he has it in himself to really stop, not when she's still so miserable looking, but he does slowly move his hand down to, instead, rest at her shoulder. Easy, now.

"I was... really scared," he offers, a quiet confession to answer her sentiment, "that I wouldn't see either of you ever again. So this... this much is good."

The holding at least would continue, with promises to pet both of them when he was more able. He had two hands. He could do this to give them the same comfort they'd always offered him. For now he just squeezed them as best he could.

"Mmm... I thought it was just me," he murmured in turn. As much as he told himself it'd be fine if it meant they had made it to Japan, Kai knew deep in his heart that he really wasn't strong enough to do that again.

"I found your note though." He offered a small hint of a smile towards Kyoko for her very excellent idea. "So I knew I'd find both of you."

It put a fresh ache in her heart to hear what she'd sort of naturally assumed--of course they'd be afraid too. But it was easier to feel so tender and fragile now that she had all this warmth to lean into.

"O-oh?" Blinking the tears that still lingered in her eyes, Kyoko admitted, "That was a just-in-case kind of thing, but... I'm glad I did it, then. I was really... really scared too, but I just couldn't let myself think I wouldn't find you both."

"It was a really smart idea," he quietly adds. He hadn't thought to do anything like that, and it definitely sounds like... he was the only one who was anticipating not finding them. Ah... they are truly too good for him. He leaves that extra depressing thought unsaid, letting his current concerns turn back to worry as he glances over at Kai.

"What... should we be doing now?" It's late, they're all worn out, and the stairs are probably not the best place to recoup for too long.

That was just being realistc, Shinji. There was nothing wrong with that. They were all still dragons, even if Kai had been a mouse for a little while there. (Which meant he would have been the fool running around for months.)

Luckily, no one had to do that. They'd been reunited very quickly, and the relief that was chasing away the panic was revealing just how truly worn out they all must have been. Kai caught Shinji's glance and hummed, turning a thoughtful look up. Getting back down the stairs was probably already going to be an ordeal, but it was easier than going Up. Ah, if only he'd brought the tent along.

"Let's head back to the inn," He decided after a bit. "There's at least a place to sit. We can take a look at what we've got and maybe we could... barter something. Or start a tab? Maybe they're used to randos."

Oh... yes, it was time to consider the next practical move, wasn't it. She could not cry on the stairs with them forever--sleep was going to sound pretty good soon, even if she wasn't ready to stop looking at the two of them yet.

The inn was as solid of a choice as Kyoko could imagine. "The lady at the desk was really nice--ah, I need to thank her if she's still there. I don't think we'd get kicked out of the lobby, if nothing else." So, with one more sniffle, time to stagger to her feet, hands held out for the taking. Let's get moving

The inn is as good of a place to try as any, they might be able to find some kind of mercy. If they're lucky, they'll be able to get some more private space to let any lingering tears out, but... let's at least get to somewhere warm and more comfortable at least. He nods along with the plan, and up they go, on wobbly legs, and even though he quietly takes her hand as he's getting up, Shinji steps back to make sure that Kai's the one in the middle. Right where he should be. Perfect.

"That's... back down, then." They can go once Kai's set.

Admittedly Kai wasn't quite ready to let either of them go yet either. He wanted to hold them and press kisses in their hair, but the driving need to make sure they were both okay was more pressing. Getting somewhere safe and warm was a good first step. Up he went with a mild sound of protest for his knees, making sure everyone was all good with all their stuff and backpack friends. No more toppling from here on out, please.

Hand in hand with each of them, Kai took a deep breath and gave each of their hands a squeeze. "Right. Back down again. Here we go." If they just took one step after another, they'd make it back down in no time.

It was lucky that the bottom half of the city seemed pretty straightforward. Getting back to the Inn was simply a matter of turning down the main road once they'd gotten far enough down. It wouldn't be too terribly long before the warm lamp lights heralded the spot of rest they were looking for.

Shinji's hand was released easily as Kyoko laced her fingers securely through Kaito's. They were both right there with her now, it was... it was fine. It was going to be okay, somehow. They'd said so, and she would try to believe it.

The trip down those steps was the easiest she'd taken that day, even with as heavy as her legs felt now. Soon enough she would be leading the way through that welcoming door, calling out a hushed "excuse meee," as she sought out the front desk. Nice lady, had your shift ended already?

Thank you for welcoming them so warmly, inn, this will be a nice reprieve for their sore muscles and weary hearts.

Kai's hand is given an extra squeeze before Shinji reluctantly loosens his hold. They probably have the talking part covered, he figures, so it might be for the best if he takes a step back and takes this time to check over his luggage. Maybe he brought along something worth bartering with? It sort of feels like his bags are lighter somehow, and a lot of what he'd taken extra time to pack was largely sentimental, but maybe...

Ah? Hm? He doesn't remember having this extra pouch? Let's see what's in here.

Kai was just as reluctant to let him go, turning a glance towards as he stepped back. It quickly softened into a small smile though and Kai gave him a little nod. They'd get things sorted, don't worry. Two stubborn people were on the case, something was bound to work out.

The blonde was paying attention to the front desk again in time to notice the receptionist coming back out front to assist. Luckily it was the same lady as before, who looked surprised when she realized she'd seen most of them at some point tonight. Oh good, you all found each other!

"Uh-huh," Kai said with a pleased little swing of Kyoko's hand. "We were wondering if you happened to still have any rooms available?"

As soon as the receptionist came into view, Kyoko dropped into a quick bow, deep and completely proper except for the hand still clutching Kaito's. "Thank you very much for delivering my message! I am in your debt already! If you just wait a little, I will definitely find a way to pay you back for that, and for a room if you will let us have one tonight!!"

Thank you for taking care of the arduous task of communicating with others, you two, you're saving Shinji a lot of extra energy. Energy he can devote to examining the contents of this mystery pouch.

The first and most obvious thing to be found is a leather bound book, which he regards with a mild look of confusion that only lasts as long as it takes for the sounds of metal shifting and settling within the depths of the bad to reach his ears. What is that, he wonders...? He reaches in, searching around for a moment before his fingers brush against the cool metal of coins. As he pulls out an offending piece gold, and when that gleam hits his eyes, his heart starts pounding again.

Ah... is he actually an idiot for not finding this earlier? Is it... is it fine for him to use this?

He glances back up, over to the desk and the extremely helpful receptionist behind it. "H-..." his voice cracks a little, but he quickly tries again despite it, "How much would it be?"

The receptionist was doing her absolute best to take all of this in stride. They did in fact have some rooms still available for the night! She had been very happy to deliver the message, and knowing that it had helped was more than enough. Surely there was no debt here, it was fine. As for the room for the night--

A direct question was much easier to answer! Our standard rooms are 25 gold pieces per night, she helpfully provided, and Kai was immediately doing mental gymnastics to try and piece together if that was Very Expensive or not. Those gymnastics led his gaze back over to Shinji and hey wait bro what was that hey bro????

The receptionist went on with a kind smile regardless of the blinking and pointing that was happening in front of her. We understand that arriving in a new destination has challenges however, so we do offer newcomer discounts. Your first few nights would just be 10 gold pieces per night.

All these groundbreaking discoveries were lost on Kyoko, as her gaze was locked powerfully onto that very helpful receptionist. She was not going to budge until she had persuaded her to let them stay the night! If only just in the lobby! But please let them have a room if at all possible!!! Ma'am!

But yes, Shinji, actually finding out the cost was probably a good idea. "10... gold pieces..." Kyoko murmured, wondering how long it would take for the three of them to scrounge that up, and how much more debt they would rack up in the meantime--and that was just if they could get the inn to accept an IOU, and not even counting what it would take to feed themselves, and--

Almost as if she could read minds, the receptionist politely cleared her throat, still smiling. If you check your pouches, you might just find you're all set.

As soon as she's given them the rate, Shinji tucks the book he's uncovered under his arm in order to better collect whatever gold he can find in his pouch. 25? Does he have that much? Oh, 10 is probably more manageable? What does that translate to versus yen or dora, he vaguely wonders. But, ok, 10, he can do that, probably. Conversion rate is not important right now, as long as they have the funds between them.

Ten gold... Shinji takes a deep breath as he pulls it all out of his bag, before stepping forward to put it on the counter. "J-just one room... should be fine, right?" He asks, sending Kai a seeking look. Nobody wants a room to themselves, do they?

Absolutely not. Kai gave a nod, reaching up to place a steadying hand at Shinji's back. Here was an encouraging little pat too because! Good job! Thank you for checking your pockets. "One room is definitely fine."

Certainly! Off she went to select a key from the assortment hanging behind the desk. Ah... I believe the rooms available each have one bed. Did we still want just one?

Kai's mouth was already opening to say that was fine, of course, but he held his tongue for a second to glance between the two of them. "I think we'd be alright?" he ventured instead, fingers curling in shirts and around hands.

Kyoko was still processing the suggestion that they might somehow have money(??), and then being shocked at the appearance of a whole new bag on her personage (?!), when Shinji stepped forward to set the requested sum out. ?!??

So many new things to think about! She had nodded along readily with Kaito--modesty wasn't anywhere near as important as staying near the boys right now. There was a slight pause at the mention of just one bed, but then she squeezed Kaito's hand and gave another, smaller nod. In this kind of situation, of course that would be all right. Right?

Only one bed...

As long as Kyoko's not raising any objections, then it should be fine. Shinji is still... not sure how well he's actually going to be able to sleep, even with the relief of having found his most important people, so there's very little risk of anyone getting kicked out on accident. This is the kind of situation where the closeness should be welcome, and they shouldn't be worrying too much about a luxurious stay in the situation they're in anyway.

"It's fine," he agrees. "Thank you."

That was that then. The receptionist cheerfully handed over their keys and offered directions to their room. If they needed anything else, they shouldn't be afraid to ask! After more thanks for this very helpful lady, it was time to go find their room.

Conquer More Stairs Challenge.

Look out, stairs. They were coming for you.

Once they had trudged up to their very own room and stepped inside, Kyoko turned around in a slow circle, dazed, not really seeing anything until her eyes landed on the boys again. "Ah..." She was so tired, a new heaviness settling over her now that they were all together in this quiet place. "This... is really happening, huh."

Finally, they are free from stairs for the rest of the evening. Thank you, cozy little inn room.

The silence washes over Shinji as they make their way in, and the relief from securing a place to stay for the night starts to undo the stress that was keeping him from falling apart the whole day. Today has been. a lot. The full scope of this emotional turbulence is in danger of finally catching up with him, even as he tries to busy himself with getting his belongings out of the way - if all of them are going to be comfortable in here, maximizing floorspace is probably for the best.

"Mm," is his quiet, noncommittal answer to Kyoko's question. It sure seems that way, doesn't it? "There... has to be some way out." There can't just be no way to get to Kyoko's world, not after everything. "We can try and figure it out tomorrow."

The sight of (one) bed was a beautiful thing. Thank you, bed. Thank you, room.

Kai had followed Shinji to set his bag down with his things, crouching down long enough to check on the roly poly cargo inside. Doing alright in there, Bug? All peachy? (orangey??) Good. Come on out and roll around a bit, it was fine. Once that was taken care of he made his way over to Kyoko to take her bags from her-- let him take at least one weight off her shoulders there.

"Yeah... We can get a better scope of things after some sleep." If it was a whole new set of gods to deal with, who knew how long it would take to appeal to them. Kai wasn't going to think about it tonight. Tonight was only for holding on to what was right in front of him.

Let him just move Kyoko's stuff out of the way, so that he could free up his hands. They were on the move now, taking turns to reach out and gently ruffle each of their hair. "We already got this far. We'll be okay."

Kyoko gratefully allowed Kaito to take her bags as she watched Bug roll around to check out their new digs. The relief at seeing the orange was quickly followed with a hit of panic and guilt--had Pen Pen made it here too? She couldn't even remember if she'd thought of him until now, with all the wild fears clouding her head all day, and now she was afraid to ask.

Curling her arms over her middle, as if she could squash down the anxieties churning her stomach, Kyoko accepted her hair ruffles with a very quiet "mhm." Was she really supposed to go to sleep now, after... everything?
